The Hatbox Ghost is an animatronic character that appeared originally in The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland but was removed within the first couple weeks of operation in 1969, when it was decided that the effect was not working properly under show lighting. Guests passing by him would see the head on the figure and the one in the hatbox rotate into view simultaneously which spoiled the effect. He was promised to return in 1984, but the original Hatbox Ghost animatronic figure became lost in storage over time. A new version of the figure was added to the attraction in 2015, shortly after Disneyland's 50th anniversary celebration. Located formerly in the ride's attic scene, the figure is described as \"an elderly [male] ghost in a cloak and top hat, leaning on a cane with a wavering hand and clutching a hatbox in the other.\"
